The impact of anal surgery on sexual function

An explorative study

Dr Matt Marino (president) and Dr Oliver Gregory (gender diversity representative), in conjunction with former secretary Professor Richard Turner, are currently undertaking research exploring the experiences of MSM who've undergone anorectal surgeries.

It is possible that many surgeons do not consider sexual function when operating on the anus or rectum when many of these operations have the potential to significantly impact the sexual wellbeing of people engaging in anoreceptive intercourse. To date, there is scant literature exploring the experiences of LGBTQIA+ patients undergoing anorectal surgery. There is a clear need for adequate preoperative counselling regarding the sexual impact of anal and rectal surgeries. We aim to explore the experience interaction between MSM patients and and their surgeon pertaining to the provision of counselling and care as it relates to sexual function and wellbeing.

From this, we hope to provide recommendations and education to help guide surgeons to provide adequate care around receptive anal sex and surgery.

If you would like to take part in the study, please take the survey here.

If you are a GP or sexual health doctor who would be willing to assist in recruitment by displaying a flyer in your clinic, please contact Dr Matt Marino on president@prideinmedicine.com
